First of all, you must get an appropriate driver’s license in the state you where you wish to practice. They must not have a license suspended or revoked in any other state nor must they have had a license suspended or revoked within the past two years. Secondly, driving instructors are usually expected to have at least two or three years of experience, no matter what type of driving they may wish to teach. Moreover, though a high school diploma may not be required, proficiency in English is necessary for driving instructors. That is necessary because they have to read road signs and communicate with law enforcement officials. Besides, for driving instructors who want to teach at public schools, a bachelor’s degree may be required, although bachelor’s degrees in specifically driving instruction are normally not available. Not to mention the fact that most states require driving instructors to take state-approved driving courses which cover traffic laws and motor vehicle safety. Thirdly, most states require driving instructors to obtain a license which includes practical and written testing as well as a thorough background check. They also require driving instructors to be at least 21 years old and driving instructor certification and licensing is handled through the state department of transportation or department of motor vehicles. In some states, however, class C driving instructor programs are authorized by the department of education. Last but not at least, it is good for driving instructors to earn a professional certification. The Commercial Vehicle Training Association offers an optional instructor certification to those who complete the various instructional modules and log the required hours of teaching experience. The certification is offered in five levels. Those who complete all five levels will earn the CVTA’s Master Instructor credential.
