This might mean anything from driving a school bus to driving the president around. In addition to great driving skills and many years of driving experience, in order for a driver to be employed by the government, he needs to have a squeaky clean driving record as well. Government driving jobs are an excellent carrier opportunity for those with a background in this field of activity. Working a government job means job security and decent pay. Such positions can be found on government, civil service or publicly funded organization websites. Not all vacancies are posted on all of the above mentioned portals, so you should browse through all job sources, when looking for such employment. It takes a long time, to do this, as it is a very time consuming, titanic task. But in the end, having a good job will make it worth it. You can also go through recruiters, so that you do not have to invest this time. But as the saying goes, time is money, and you will have to pay for their time. Through such recruiters you can easily find positions in your area with different types of local or federal organizations.
One of the most sought after government driving jobs is the bus driver job. This is an activity that many drivers prefer, as it is a relatively calm environment, and this job does not take you long distances away from you home and family, as it usually a local position. Local and county governments employ bus driving personnel, in order to provide transportation for their citizens, who do not own a personal means of transportation, or prefer public transportation due to various reasons. City bus drivers have a pretty monotonous job, routine and punctuality being the key words describing it. They have an assigned route, with well determined stops, where they pick up passengers, collect the bus fare- which is sanctioned by the city- from them, and then transport said passengers to the bus stop of their destination. All the while bus drivers must keep an eye on the schedule they have to respect, in order for citizens who use public transportation to also be able to keep their schedules on time. Punctuality is a key element in this business, since people’s daily activities are scheduled based on the time it takes them to get from A to B. For example, schoolchildren depend on their school bus to get to school on time, and not stand in the street for hours after school is out, but get home on time as well. School bus drivers may have “extracurricular” activities themselves, as they may sometimes be asked to drive students and teachers on field trips. In order to be able to fulfill all of their duties in the outstanding manner required by them, drivers are offered regular training by the local government they work for.
But there are many other government driving jobs as well, some of them being more high risk than others. Two of the riskiest driving jobs a publicly employed driver can have, are within law enforcement and the firefighting squad. This means very irregular hours and added risk to the job. Working for emergency response teams takes a very collected, calm individual, who knows how to react well under extreme pressure, a person that never loses his cool. Their task is not only to keep the public safe, but also to do their jobs in such impeccable manner, that their team mates are kept safe as well. In order to operate a fire truck, drivers must be in the possession of a commercial driver’s license and will be retested on a regular basis. Regular retesting also applies to police officers, driving police vehicles. These are all safety measures meant to protect the public, especially in the case of such extreme situations as high-speed pursuits, vehicle chase or emergency response.
If drivers would like to have quieter, less irregular and dangerous government driving jobs, then they also have the opportunity of becoming personal drivers. Many government officials have a personal driver, to transport them to their destination. However, based on the rank of the government official, additional training is given to drivers, concerning security measures that need to be taken, and which they need to be aware of and in compliance with. Being able to drive in any kind of challenging situation is imperative, but more than that, having a good knowledge of your vehicle is also mandatory. In this manner you can react quickly to any type of mechanical problems that may occur, or may be inflicted upon the vehicle. When on official business, drivers must be able to act as body guards as well, if the situation requires it, in the sense, that they must be able to protect their passenger from any type of harm that may endanger them on the road.
